English as a Second Language or ESL-Bilingual Endorsement Only
Candidates with a professional educator license seeking to add the English as a Second Language and/or Bilingual Endorsement to their license must complete the following coursework. The ESL Endorsement is valid only at the grade levels of the teacher's current license endorsement. All coursework is aligned with the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) standards. This is a non-degree program; candidates may, however, apply the endorsement courses to a Master's in Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction as indicated in the previous section.
Candidates who seek a Bilingual Endorsement must take ENLE 52700 as part of the state-required 18 hours of coursework and successfully complete the ISBE Target Language Proficiency test. The Target Language Proficiency test may be waived if you hold an Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy or the Global Seal of Biliteracy. Click Seal-of-Biliteracy-One-Pager.pdf (isbe.net) for more information about the State and Global Seal of Biliteracy.
Two years of teaching experience is not required for enrollment or ESL/Bilingual Endorsement.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) grants professional educator licenses (PELs) and endorsements. All endorsement candidates who successfully complete the ISBE requirements for subsequent endorsement on an Illinois PEL will be recommended for endorsement. Note: ISBE requirements are subject to change. Please contact your advisor for the most up to date endorsement information.
