Curriculum and Instruction: Reading Teacher Endorsement / Master of Education (M.Ed.)
The Master of Education degree option provides the core courses that meet State of Illinois requirements for the Reading Teacher Endorsement in a challenging and rigorous program. This program leads to endorsement on an educator license; it does not lead to initial teacher license.
In addition to the Department of Education admission requirements, candidates seeking the Master of Education degree with Reading Teacher Endorsement must meet the following requirements:
1. A valid Illinois Professional Educator License with a teaching endorsement.*
2. Fulfillment of Survey of Exceptional Child requirement (105 ILCS 5/21-2a).*
3. Successful completion of the following program requirements. No more than 6 hours may be transferred; certain courses may not be transferred.
* International students and those not pursuing teaching licensure endorsement, such as students pursuing the coursework for use in other fields, are exempt from the requirements for an Illinois Professional Educator License and Survey of Exceptional Child.

State Assessment Requirements
At the conclusion of the program, candidates seeking a Reading Teacher Endorsement on a Professional Educator License must pass the Illinois Test for the Reading Teacher or its State-approved equivalent.
