Unmanned Aircraft Systems / Minor

Students who complete the UAS Minor will be able to apply the concepts of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) development and operation to meet the needs of real world problems. This program will teach students to examine a situation and determine the best classification of unmanned aerial vehicle to use. Students will also be able to operate the system to achieve these goals.

Students enrolled in the UAS Minor at Lewis will be able to:

• Demonstrate an understanding and ability to apply the fundamental skills of UAS operation to project design.

• Successfully apply Crew Resource Management (CRM) concepts in a collaborative UAS team environment.

• Apply foundational computer science and engineering skills in developing UAS algorithms.

• Apply foundational aviation maintenance electrical and avionics skills to UAS devices.

This minor will be open to all students in any program of study at Lewis University. This field has implications for a multitude of uses and will benefit many academic and industry disciplines.

The UAS major is highly technical. To be admitted to this minor, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for matriculated students and an ACT composite score of 21 for first-year students. However, the minor is meant to be an introduction to the field. Because certain skills sets are necessary, students admitted into the minor must have some familiarity with aircraft, flight, and the aviation industry and/or be enrolled in an aviation program.  Thus, all students in the minor must take AVTR 13000 Private Pilot Ground 1. Two upper-division courses (6 hours) and one other course (3 hours) may not apply to any other major or minor at Lewis University.
