This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills previously attained. The following verb tenses for regular and irregular indicative verbs will be taught: present, preterite, imperfect, future, conditional. In addition the following material will also be included: possessive adjectives and pronouns; demonstrative adjectives and pronouns; interrogative pronouns; por and para; ser and estar; and relative pronouns. The course will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions.

21-203 Spanish for Heritage Speakers 1

A language maintenance and development course intended for bilingual students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home and speak or understand the language to some extent, but have not had prior instruction in the Spanish language and want to improve their language skills through formal study. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing, using short stories and other professional publications as texts to examine. The course includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the stories they have read and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities.

A continuation of 21-203. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing and includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students are expected to view films from Latin American and Spain outside of class. In class, students discuss the significance and meaning of the films and examine language patterns. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the films they have viewed and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities.

This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills attained in Spanish Grammar 1 and advance students to greater competency in understanding and using Spanish grammar. The following verb tenses for indicative regular and irregular verbs will be covered: present perfect tense; pluscuamperfect tense; future perfect tense. The present, imperfect, and pluperfect subjunctive will be included as well as the use of the subjunctive with "if clauses." This learning will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions.

21-311 Reading and Writing Chinese 1

This course is primarily intended for students minoring in Chinese. Its main goals are to develop skills in reading and writing Chinese characters and to assist students in reaching Intermediate Level Proficiency in these same areas. It is the first course of two. Both courses focus on intensive practice in reading and writing in Chinese characters. Students will read narratives using Chinese characters, and these narratives will facilitate the student's access to Chinese culture and literary tradition. Students will learn to write approximately 500 characters and type approximately 800.  This course does not satisfy the General Education requirement for Humanities.

21-343 Russian Conversation and Composition 2

This course is primarily intended for students minoring in Russian and is a sequel to 21-342 Russian Conversation and Composition 1.  Students will develop more intense facility in reading, speaking, and writing Russian. Students will expand their vocabulary base, learn more idiomatic expressions, and read and write more difficult prose.  The main goal of this course is to assist students to reach Intermediate High-Level proficiency in Speaking, Listening, and Writing Russian.  Russian short fiction and other readings reflecting aspects of Russian culture are included for practice in reading, translating, speaking, and writing.  This course does not satisfy the General Education requirement for Humanities.

21-361 U.S.-Latino Literature

This course examines the literary works of U.S.-Latinas and Latinos, from the colonial presence of Spanish-language writers in the territories that became the United States up to the present, with an emphasis on the range of literature produced by U.S.-Hispanic and/or Latino/a writers during the 1960s Civil Rights era, the Latina feminist boom of the 1980s, and the shifting demographics and diasporas of contemporary times.

21-362 Latin American Literature

This course examines literary texts from the Spanish-speaking countries of the Caribbean, Central America, and South America. It emphasizes significant literary movements, such as magical realism; and major twentieth-century authors, such as Chile’s Mistral and Neruda, Colombia’s Marquez, Guatemala’s Asturias, Mexico’s Octavio Paz, and Peru’s Vargas-Llosa.

21-363 Spanish Linguistics

This course will delve into the study of phonetics (the minimal unit that makes up languages);  phonology (how speech sounds are produced) and improving pronunciation; morphology (how words are formed out of smaller meaningful units);  syntax (how sentences and other phrases can be constructed out of smaller phrases and words).  Additionally the course will include major pronunciation differences across the Spanish-speaking world with special attention paid to Latin America, Basque, Gallego, and Catalan Spanish.

21-372 Spain and Its Literature

Spanish majors will familiarize themselves with the literature of Spain from the epic poem Cantar de Mio Cid, to the works of Juan Ruiz, the Arcipreste de Hita, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Lope de Vega, José de Espronceda and other realist poets; and Miguel de Unamuno, José Ortega y Gasset, and Gabriel Miró, among other prominent writers.

21-405 Community Internship for Spanish Majors

Senior Spanish majors who wish to earn credit through hands-on experience in the many agencies in Chicagoland serving the Latino population will take this course.  150 hours of internship is required, together with other academic requirements, one of which is an acceptable report written in Spanish on the experience.  Students must apply to the Foreign Language Program Director for permission to take an internship.

21-450 Advanced Spanish

This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to assist students to reach Low Advanced Proficiency in Speaking/Listening and Writing in Spanish. Students will read and discuss international scholarship on a variety of topics related to studies on Spanish language and culture. An acceptable term paper is required.

21-476 Spanish Seminar

This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Spanish-speaking countries worldwide. It will focus on these countries’ most recent social, political, and/or cultural developments. Characteristics of each country studied during the semester will be highlighted for a deeper awareness of their cultural differences and similarities. Spanish major seniors that complete this seminar are provided with unique opportunities to be exposed to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries as well as to work on a focused topic of interest that arises from seminar discussions and readings. The student submits an acceptable research paper and must present the research to the class or preferably at a local or national conference.

21-498 Independent Study in a Foreign Language

This course provides capable students with an in-depth understanding of the research and writing needed in preparation for graduate studies in a foreign language.  Language major seniors that complete this capstone course are provided with unique opportunities to broaden their knowledge of the target language and its influence on cultures around the globe.  Students in consultation with their advisor or mentor will select a narrow topic to explore throughout the semester. Topics may include issues in history, literature, political science, social justice, sociology, and so forth. The research product (a paper) must be a sustained study with a Works Cited page, using an appropriate parenthetical documentation style.  Quality research could result in publication, a desirable goal. The student who applies for an independent study in a foreign language must have achieved Low High-Proficiency in the target language.

At least four 300- or 400-level courses completed in the target language. Consent of the mentor and the Director of the Foreign Language Program. To qualify for an Independent Study, a student must have successfully completed 60 credit hours, at least 12 of which were earned at Lewis, and have earned at Lewis University a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
