FLAN-20300 Spanish for Heritage Speakers 1

A language maintenance and development course intended for bilingual students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home and speak or understand the language to some extent, but have not had prior instruction in the Spanish language and want to improve their language skills through formal study. The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing, using short stories and other professional publications as texts to examine. The course includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the stories they have read and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities. Restricted to heritage speakers of Spanish.

FLAN-20400 Spanish for Heritage Speakers 2

The course focuses on vocabulary development, literacy skills, grammar, reading and writing and includes consideration of the relationship between language and culture. Students are expected to view films from Latin American and Spain outside of class. In class, students discuss the significance and meaning of the films and examine language patterns. Students discuss, write reports, and give oral presentations in Spanish on the films they have viewed and analyzed. This course does not fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities. Restricted to heritage speakers of Spanish.

FLAN-20600 Spanish Grammar 2

This course is primarily intended for students majoring in Spanish Language and Culture. Its main goal is to consolidate grammatical skills attained in Spanish Grammar 1 and advance students to greater competency in understanding and using Spanish grammar. The following verb tenses for indicative regular and irregular verbs will be covered: present perfect tense; pluscuamperfect tense; future perfect tense. The present, imperfect, and pluperfect subjunctive will be included as well as the use of the subjunctive with "if clauses." This learning will be accompanied by a component of readings and discussions.

FLAN-21600 Foreign Language Workshop

A Foreign Language workshop provides beginning students in a foreign language with practice in reading, writing, and speaking in the target language. Opportunities for practice in pronunciation and conversation enhance oral/aural skills. Consult the Director of the Foreign Language Program for the relevant syllabus in the target language. A variety of workshops are offered.

Intermediary course in the study and practice of a selected foreign language in a country where the target language is the primary language.  Emphasis is on oral proficiency and onsite learning ensures numerous opportunities to practice the language.  This course is part of a Study Abroad experience.

FLAN-29200 Second-Year Language in Location 2

A more demanding intermediary course in the study and practice of a selected foreign language in a country where the target language is the primary language. Emphasis is on oral proficiency and onsite learning ensures numerous opportunities to practice the language. This course is part of a Study Abroad experience.

FLAN-29900 Intermediate Practice Language in Location

This course provides for intermediate study in a target language in location.  Intended for Study Abroad students, content will depend upon the university in which the student is enrolled.
